Alcohol addiction

Alcohol is a very powerful drug, a tranquiliser, which causes changes to the way you feel, think and behave. Excessive alcohol consumption (more than 2 units a day for females and more than 4 units a week for males) can seriously impact your health and alcohol addiction can be a life-threatening illness.

Alcohol is often used by many to ‘de-stress’ and relax after a long day’s work and due to alcohol's addictive nature this habit can result in the belief that you can only relax with alcohol, which then further reinforces alcohol use.

However, for some people alcohol consumption can eventually result in alcohol addiction which is characterised by compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcohol despite negative consequences to personal health, relationships and social standing.

Alcohol addiction is also characterised by an obsession of self-imposed limits i.e. some will limit their alcohol use when at work or the situation demands and then binge in the evenings or on weekends. In severe cases alcohol addiction usually results in withdrawal symptoms when alcohol consumption is stopped and in some cases abrupt discontinuation can result in seizures. Because of this risk associated with alcohol addiction, medical detoxification is usually recommended.

Alcohol addiction can also result in, and worsen, mental health difficulties such as depression and anxiety, and can result in dementia and psychosis.

Some warning signs are:
  • you do not feel right without a drink, or need a drink to start the day
  • you get very shaky, sweaty, and anxious/tense when drink is unavailable
  • you can drink a lot without becoming drunk
  • you need to drink more and more to get the same effect
  • you try to stop, but find you can't
  • you carry on drinking even though you can see it is interfering with daily living, family and relationships
  • you get "memory blanks" where you can't remember what happened for a period of hours or days.
